Hey there jay. Ok, to chat, press M. Then start typing. your message will appear at the top of the screen. then when you have finished typing, press ENTER For the full list of keys, press F1 when in the sailing fields

To use the smiley's you need to press M then click on the desired one with your mouse then enter
