Threads ARE NOT USUALLY open in this forum. To file a protest use ALWAYS the Protest Editor, if the protest references a saved race use the link provided in the Results/Replays option for that race. If the protest cannot be referenced by a racelet use the Editor from the Protest Room option, Thank you.

The 10 Commandments of Racing 2010/02/03 05:10 (2 Years ago)
From the excellent Blog: Racing Rules Of Sailing - Look To Windward.
A good basic set of rules that can help teach the RRS in its simplest form.

Ten Racing Rule Commandments:

1) Port keeps clear of starboard.
2) Windward keeps clear of leeward.
3) The boat astern keeps clear of the boat ahead.
4) A boat Tacking keeps clear of one that is not.
5) Avoid collisions. Racing Rules are defensive to prevent collisions not offensive racing tactics.
6) If you gain right of way or change course, give the other boat time (room) to keep clear.
7) The inside boat or boats at three boat lengths from the mark are entitled to room to round the mark.
8) A boat that is backing up or not racing keeps clear.
9) If you have violated a rule, take a penalty.
10) It is better to give way than to spend hours in a protest room.

11) Manners and respect! Respect the other boats around you - they are racing aswell so have enough decency to transfer a penalty by pressing TT if you make an error.
Dont be afraid to say sorry

No 5 is broken time and time again. It really annoys me as real life is not like it. Collisions cause damage to expensive wooden boats and will rapidly lose you friends.

Rule 14 Avoiding Contact - seems not to be enforced on Sailx and boats that break it by deliberately bashing into give way boats get rewarded by finishing sooner.

it doesn't seem very sporting to me.

I agree about #5.

Also check out the sailx Sailing Instructions turbolaser. They change R14.b so the ROW boat can hold course and let the computer system (Rules Engine) decide which boat broke a rule.

Aloha!

This sounds like another great reason to subscribe to get access to the "Fairsail field" where R14 is fully on and you are rewarded with 3x the race points
