Downwind shadows are too weak. The short courses combined with the weak shadows make for boring races that end at mark 2.
Can we make the downwind shadows stronger?

Agreed, 1-2 at mark 2 = 100% win. The shadows were ok a month or 2 ago I think.

Possibly a little weak but not by much I feel . I was thinking about this when I was on the water on the weekend in RL and noticing how close I could sail to another boat in thier shaddow before I would start dropping away.
I think only make the shaddows stronger by about 10-20%

It would be better finding the way to make more ppl sail on team racing fields rather than changing shadows.

Yeah before they made the change I thought the shadows were a little too strong(though it made it very tactical) but now I think they're too weak
Passing people downwind is almost impossible so I think they should make the shadows do more

That is a non sequitur 333. We are trying to improve the gameplay and realism of the downwind leg.
As for your comment, the answer is we need more subs. Non subscribers who use this advert free website all the time should seriously consider becoming a member and contributing a little, especially if they play teams. Think about the costs involved in running the site/server, the cost of development and free time put in by moderators, programmers and developers. By becoming a sub, monetarily you are only helping to offset the costs.

OP I must agree with the DW thing. However, it is very true team racing in SAILX has gone downhill. Just my IMHO, i think sailx will have the stats.
As per your comment (see above in bold) I think everyone should be able to judge the benefits of subscribing. Furthermore, ppl who pays, would like to see changes such as the one of just ppl resseting races or being hacked etc.
Personally I cannot subscribe. I can only play in summer, when I have real time. However, once academic course starts it is pretty much impossible. So is it really worth for me to subscribe, only being here 2/3 months annually?
Thanks,

333, that is why I said people who play it all the time and people who play teams especially those that complain about having to wait.

I think a good point to make (my opinion only of course, but):
Every user: guest, registered, subscriber, admin, moderator... all are entitled to their own opinions/suggestions and those opinions/suggestions should all carry the same weight.
The benefit of paying vs not, for example, should not (and I suspect is not) more favoritism or rights... outside the simple fact that if you pay, you are given the right to be ranked among all the other subscribers, first dibs (used to be only dibs) of match racing, and same for team racing.
Do we need more participation in team racing? Yes. Do we need more in match racing? Yes. But I could say the same for fleet racing too, to be honest. Is the payment thing the problem/draw back from this? I think not... otherwise when Aestela was kind enough to change it from teams/match being subscribers ONLY to what it is now, we would no longer have the problem we still have... was there a brief suddden surge of participation when it first happened? Yes... but still back to normal IMO. The biggest thing is, most people on here simply prefer the fleet racing over teams/match... and who is going to give up the chance of a 20+ boat fleet for the sake of a 4-6 boat fleet, especially when 9 times out of 10 at least 1-2 of those potential teams boats are either inexperienced or trouble makers in the first place. There are plenty of users on here that IMO play enough that warrant paying to do so... obviously theyre not required to, nor should they be, but they could certainly justify doing so if it came down to it.
I am also quite sure A's "vision" was not to have everyone pay in the first place, only have a certain % do so in order to keep the site going... but at any rate back to the thread's original purpose:
The shadows should be put back to their original strength IMO... but J should have no effect below 90 deg to the wind. The upwind legs I also think should be longer... I'll make a diagram of my idea later.

How/Why did this discussion even begin to talk about subscriptions?

333, to answer your question, "is it worth it if you're only here for 2/3 months?"
You're in luck, my friend!
SailX offers 4 packages for subscription:
Length__________Credits__________Cost (in Spain)
7 day trial_________100____________€1.99
90 days__________1000___________€12.49
180 days_________1750___________€19.99
365 days_________3000___________€29.99
Just thought you'd like to know this..
And shadows, too weak, need to be a bit stronger.

That's your decision, of course.
But I can help you with the process:
1. calculate the number of races you have already sailed this year (2010)
2. multiply by, say, 1.3 to take into account the races you will probably sail the rest of the year.
3. multiply by 0.25 to get the number of hours
4. Divide 30€ by the number of hours, you'll get the cost of sailx per hour for you
5. imagine another activity (going to cinema, reading a book, going out with friends, real sailing...) and calculate the cost per hour.
6. compare taking into account the 'other' factors (quantity of fun, social features, learning aspects)
7. Decide

can we just make the downwind shadows stronger again? the way it is set up now, defeats the purpose of a digital "N" course.
We might as well sail modified triangles.

| Downwind Shadows & V | | | The downwind shadows are much to weak.
Also, above 8-10 knots of wind it should be fastest to sail the space bar line. I believe the vmg is equal on a variety of angles... This is NOT the way real sailing works. Reaching at 15 knots of breeze would be a huge loss to a boat sailing directly at the mark. Is there anyway we can make some changes? |
